Father’s Day is Coming Around Fast!

Every year, Father's Day isn’t exactly on the same day, but instead falls on the third Sunday of June.  This year, that means Father's Day is on the 15^th of June – put this date in your calendar so you don’t forget, and your Dad doesn’t miss out!

A Brief History

The origins of Father’s Day can be traced back to the early 1900s in the USA, where in 1910, Sonora Smart Dodd in Spokane, Washington wanted to honour her Father, who was a Civil War veteran and also single-handedly raised her and her five siblings, with a celebration.  Over time, its popularity in the US grew, until it became a national holiday in 1972.

Here in the UK, Father’s Day doesn’t have as tight of an origin story as in the US, and likely grew in popularity after World War II thanks to the growing influence of American culture, as well as the increasing popularity of Mother’s Day.  It was really the retailers and card companies here in the UK which helped to cement it as part of Britain’s yearly traditions.

At the end of the day, whether you’re in Spokane, Washington or Nottingham, England, the sentiment of Father’s Day remains the same: an opportunity for us to celebrate our Fathers and other male role models in our lives – a chance to say “thank you” to those who have guided us and helped us become who we are today (and maybe were also the ones to first introduce us to some chocolate!).
